Poplar Regatta 2023 Results Post (part 1)

After a twelve year hiatus Poplar regatta is returned to us and what a day. This was ultimately no tinpot regatta, with some very competitive crews in the mix, not least Curlew RC.

So much to talk about I am splitting the posts. Starting with the women!

First up it’s the Kiernan, Wizzy, Kat, and Kam IV (aka the KWiKK IV) and you know these gals are on the road to HWR. An impressive heat saw them row a 7:35 separated by a length to the leaders Vesta B. As the commentary said ‘Curlew is not giving up’ showing the girls in this boat have real grit and aren’t afraid to attack the race. In a final against some of the speediest IVs in the country they shaved an impressive 10 seconds off their heat time for 7:25. While fifth in the gold final, they would have likely claimed the top spot in the trophy category. Love the photo of them just past the finish line showing how much they gave in the race. Hard not to be excited about this boat, onto Marlow and Met for them.

Next up were Jenna and Claire in a straight final of the coxless pairs and again a tough category given the quality of the boats. An elegant row and flawless line, as well as pushing hard throughout, leaves them a lot to be proud of. They raced again later in the day with their compadres Alex and Ashley in the Trophy Coxless IVs. A smooth row saw them shave an impressive 11 seconds off their Wallingford effort – again showing that they are building throughout the season. Next up for them? Peterborough! They are going to have a great time there I think.

Finally, our intrepid coxed IV led by Charlotte. A completely scratch crew, they raced perhaps the most exciting head to head of the day battling globe for third place in their heat for a thrilling derby. The spoils went to Globe this time, but they had to work hard and I think with a bit more water time under their belt our crew will best them!

Great day women’s squad. We are proud.
