Bang the drums it’s our Wyfold Challenge Cup results post!

The prequalified serious men of Curlew A had their first heat against Kingston RC. Taking to the water amid a very excited clapping out from Curlew RC’S Henley’s support crew they looked clean and confident. What followed was a great performance, with a strong start leading to an early lead which saw our crew put some serious clear water between them and their rivals. The only thing better than the win that followed was the commentators confirming, yet again, that Fabien and Ben are indeed brothers.*
The next day the boys hit the water for a ruck with Upper Thames – a crew with some serious punch. Our boys pushed hard, raced well (and according to their Stravas even faster than the day before) but ultimate the day went to Upper Thames. No shame in losing to a crew of that calibre, who I heard later may have boasted an international and Thames Challenge Cup winner in their number.
While the Wyfold Challenge Cup eludes Curlew RC (one day!) we are very proud of this crew. They have grown so much in just the past two months, with big jumps in their performance, that it’s hard not to be excited for next season. And combined with this, it was the first time we had got through to a day 2 since 2017. Curlew RC is a small club that can’t bring to bear the resources of some of our west London rivals, so that we punch so well above our weight speaks to the work ethic of our rowers and the club around them.
A huge well done to Nick, Fabien, Peter and Ben. Next year even better!
*my favourite thing about this is that the commentators saw on the website both Ben’s statement that Fabien is not his brother, followed by my counter claim citing last year’s HRR commentary and chose to call them brothers AGAIN.
