A toast 🥂 to our Henley Women, Kat, Kam, Wizzy and Kiernan.
They bid for the 2023 Lester Trophy at Henley’s Women’s Regatta. A strong season of hard work saw them qualify for one of 16 hotly contested places in a year of record entries.
Drawing Thames A in the first round they attacked the race all the way, showing again the grit and determination that makes this crew special. A ballsy start and a refusal to be intimidated saw them stay close to their rival crew the whole way, and a push in the last 500m even gave the mighty Thames a fright.
The victory went to Thames (bah!) but as the cliche goes, these women are first in our hearts. Thanks to all the supporters who came down, our east london clubs for cheering us on (East london 4eva!) and a doff of the cap to Ewan for the coaching.
Last words go to the bow seat, Kam:
‘So proud. We finished so close to a crew that were 20s faster than us at Met.
So much respect for this crew. We poured our hearts into this, broke our bodies, minds and worked so hard to qualify for an incredibly competitive category this year, beating crews who we matched at races leading up to HWR. Go on Curlew! Only crew in the qualifiers that had just one crew at HWR. Small and mighty 💪’
