Rolling on with HWR announcements we move to our three seat, and Curlew’s women’s Captain, Wizzy Heap ahead of her third Henley with Curlew.
Over to her good friend and rowing comrade Kat to speak about what makes Wizzy such a powerhouse in our club:
‘What does Wizzy bring to a boat? Well, there are many, many answers to that question. It's impossible to list them all, but (to get corporate for a moment) here is a high-level summary:
She brings TECHNIQUE, with catches so sharp they'll have your eye out.
She brings ABSOLUTE FOCUS. One of the joys of making calls while sitting behind Wizzy is seeing her actively make every change I ask for. Call for strong finishes? See that elbow pop out. Call to sit up? Best believe she's about to get five inches taller.
She brings SPEED. Whether it's in a boat, on an erg, or on a run (often prohibited by Ewan but that won't stop her), Wizzy loves to go fast, and will commit 100% to making that happen, even if it means a hayfever-induced wheezing finish to the race.
And as if all that weren't enough, she brings LAUGHTER, INFECTIOUS ENTHUSIASM and FANTASTIC HAIR. [editor: testify!]
Outside of the boat (feels like a wild concept right now but it does exist), Wizzy brings the same ambition and relentless joy to everything she does, whether it's walking a mind-blowing (and frankly silly) 100k steps in a day ON HER BIRTHDAY to raise money for Dementia UK, serenading Instagram with ukulele renditions of pop classics, churning out amazing dinosaur drawings, or educating us all on the intricate complexities of our menstrual cycles. She's a tireless ambassador for the women's squad, a deeply caring person and a ready shoulder to drunkenly cry on.
We're ready to send it with you Wizzy, our hug-counting, pullup-crushing, antihistamine-popping, dinosaur-loving, Welsh dancing queen of a captain!’
Wizzy submitted a picture of her investing in free speed via fashion forward bucket hats as a wee bairn, foretelling her future as a rower. Also included is a photo from the start of her rowing career! We’re proud of how far you’ve come and to have you in our club.
