The Curlew men put in a strong performance at the Reading Amateur Regatta, showcasing the newfound strength of the men’s squad in 2015.
Curlew comfortably steered through a notoriously tricky first round. They raced Warwick University in IM3, known for looking good on the start line with their calendar boy line up. Warwick were quick off the start, but once Curlew settled into their rhythm they rapidly moved through Warwick and then walked away, winning 5 lengths clear.
Next on the agenda, Southampton University. Curlew looked confident heading up the start, every inch a crew destined to race at Henley. However Southampton proved too strong in the final third of the race. Still, Curlew put up a valiant fight, proving to the coaches that Curlew have ample spirit and are ready to take on the Henley qualifiers this week.
The Curlew women also raced at Reading, entering a IM3 VIII. The scratch crew bravely took on the challenge and fought hard, but succumbed to Reading University in the second round. The regatta was just the beginning of the women’s squad summer campaign, however, which will draw on the depth of talent in the squad to field competitive boats at Kingston, St Neots and Oxford City.
