Joining Curlew Women means becoming part of a bunch of women that are highly competitive, social and love rowing!
We are a small, friendly, and competitive squad. The women’s squad is comprised of rowers from a varied backgrounds of rowing: those who have rowed their whole life; those who learned at university, and; those who have progressed through learn to row and the development squads at Curlew RC.
One of our biggest squad aims is to be competitive in the largest head and regatta races in the UK; two of which are Women’s Eights Head of the River Race (WEHORR) and Henley Women’s Regatta (HWR). Our most recent results speak for themselves with our top VIII having placed in the top 100 in WEHORR in the past couple of years – 58th in 2022, and winning the Medium Club Pennant in 2018. Over the past five (racing) years, Curlew have entered Henley Women’s Regatta and qualified a crew every single time through qualifying races – the top 16 of their category:
2018: Copas Cup (Aspirational Club VIIIs) reaching quarter finals
2019: Lester Trophy (Aspirational Club IVs) reaching quarter finals
2020: No event
2021: Lester Trophy
2022: Copas Cup
2023: Lester Trophy
As part of the summer racing programme, we will race at the main national regattas, including Wallingford Regatta and Metropolitan regatta, as well as a range of regional regattas. In the winter, we will also go to regional and London-based head races.
The squad is run by the Women’s Captain, in collaboration with the Club Captain and Senior Coach. Weekend training at the Royal Albert Dock involves Saturday and Sunday technical and race piece practices, and four erg/weights sessions at our Greenwich gym during the week. In the summer months some weekday sessions are replaced by additional water sessions.
We welcome people of all abilities and backgrounds, and will endeavour to find you a place in the squad where you feel like your rowing aspirations are met.
