Tom Weekes, the Senior Men’s Captain has put together his thoughts about the start of the season which are shared below.

Five eights boated onto the docks on the first day of the 2016/2017 season. something Curlew hasn’t seen for many a year. This included some familiar faces with returning members from the 2015/16 season and old faces surfacing from the wood work, joiners from other local clubs as well as a raft of fresh faced new athletes amazed that the docks could be that flat.

Since then we have grown used to our new head coach Fred’s occasionally brutal comments, but he has not let us settle into a rhythm on the weekends.  He is constantly changing crews to ensure every session is competitive and keep pushing us harder.

It has also been encouraging to see our development squad boating two eights regularly. With a number of them having made the transition to the senior squads this season this bodes well for the future success of this squad.

This season is shaping up to be competitive, challenging and I hope ultimately rewarding at all levels of the club. I am incredibly impressed by the attitude shown by all of the athletes I have rowed with so far. If we keep tearing each other apart on the weekends and supporting each other during the week then I am sure we are going to do great things as a club this season.
