Training camp recap, part one: The performance men’s squad

A great week of rowing and growing for our performance men in Curlew RC. Curlew knows how to have fun but don’t doubt we are a serious club when it counts. We might play sometimes, but our performance rowers have bags of commitment and are always pushing to be better, sharper and stronger.

They had a great training camp in Nottingham this past week. In the words of their Captain Ben (a man who sets a very high standard when it comes to dedication to training) they kept their heads up and just got on with it, showing great cohesion across the squad.

Coaches appreciated how switched on everyone was from day one right through to day five, with everyone clearly intent on making steps forward for themselves and their crews. Strong commitment across the board, buying into the mileage without complaint, and showing complete openness to feedback. One shared goal, to make the boat go faster.

Jack Pooley, from his vantage point of the coaches launch and having known the club for many years, said our performance men have a real sharpness in their technique that he hasn’t seen in his time with the club.

He also gave kudos to Ged,Frieder, Chris and Ryan in particular for their willingness to learn and to get stuck in wherever needed. Martin was also praised for doing a stellar job swapping sides more than once. And of course our coxes (where would we be without them?) for their ability to elevate the performance of the boat and bolstering the coaching effort.

Well done to our performance men. But don’t believe they are satisfied. They are still hungry.
