Training Camp recap (part 4)
It’s the final recap from training camp and this one is all about Ged. I wasn’t at training camp but if there was one consistent bit of feedback I heard coming out of that week it was about this guy and the huge jumps forward he has made in the past six months. Captain Ben, a man who doesn’t praise lightly, said he is fast becoming the tidiest rower in the eight.
This would be high praise for anyone who came to our club, but Ged didn’t take pick up a blade as a teenager or at uni, he’s come to the sport as an adult through Curlew’s Learn to Row program (pandemic edition 20/21). From this he’s gone in seemingly record time into the senior squad and into the top eight for the men. And he just keeps working and improving.
We kinda knew he was something special from the get (as evidenced by early dialogue between me and one of the captains on his potential and immediately beasty ergs, shown on this post) but what has always had impressed me is his humility. For someone with a lot to boast about he is never too proud and always focusing on what he could do better – as shown by his early exchanges with his peers after going into small boats. We could all afford to be a bit more like Ged.
So please enjoy a video evidence of his aforementioned tidy rowing at camp, his very very impressive single leg squat, and a meme he posted in response to Captain Ben’s start of season missive to all the men who want to go to Henley this year – summarising two notes pages of text in five words.
We salute you Ged! From turning the novice eight from stroke seat to the top VIII, you’ve come a long way in a short amount of time 🫡
